Coach training – coach trainer are two different terms but they get mixed up by a lot and are used interchangeably. The question remains:
what is coaching and what is training?
Who is a trainer and who is a coach?
Training:
transferring a group of (expertise and skill – knowledge – behaviors) from a
professional (trainer) to a person of less experience (trainee) in order to
reach a specific level of performance and develop the level of performance in
specific areas.
Coaching:
Helping
(the coaching client) discover their desire and true goals then planning the
perfect method to achieve and implement those goals
As
in supporting the client achieve their desires in the method that they see fit.
Hence,
the main difference between training and coaching is (planning for the final
goal – the approach)
Planning for the final goal
The training process:
It
is a fully planned process with a specific, determined level of the trainee enrolled
in the training program, and the final level expected of the trainee after
obtaining the training. It is planned what contents the trainee will receive
and how this will be done.
The
person who does the planning is someone other than the trainee such as the
trainer or training manager or human resources manager.
The coaching process:
Is
a process done with the cooperation between the coach and client or beneficiary
from coaching, where the coach and client agree on the goals that the client
seeks to achieve in the first session.
In
other words, the one who has the upper hand in planning the coaching process is
the beneficiary of the coaching, and the coach is just an assistant to him rather
than a decision-maker.
Our approach
Training process:
Depends
on transferring the training content from the trainer to the trainee to gain
what is planned through using various methods to create interaction.
Coaching process:
It is primarily a creative conversational process
Depends
on dialogue exchange between the coach and client where the coach asks a simple
question that does not aim towards a definitive answer in order for the client
to have complete freedom of thought. The conversation aims for the client to
challenge themselves in order to reach their very own achievements and desires.
So what differentiates a trainer from a coach?
Trainer:
A
person who has extensive experience in a specific field and has achieved very
acceptable success in that field.
Coach:
A
person with experience in the coaching field in terms of how to interact with
the customer, ask questions and challenge the customer's thinking.
And
it is not required that the coach have life experience in the same topic of the
coaching session, as within the coaching process, (the client is more
experienced than the coach in the subject of the coaching session).
We
hope we have clarified the difference between the trainer vs. the coach and
training vs. coaching.
